Glass Art as a Career

George AguisGeorge Agius won the Student Award for her entry Kai-wiana, a clever depiction of a kiwi feast, complete with pavlova and barbequed food.

Karl Chitham appreciated the way George “demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of the medium while exploring a whimsical side that is sometimes only possible with the freedom allowed during study.”

Second year Diploma of Glass students, Hamish and George were among 11 Wanganui Glass School students invited to enter their work in the RE:FRACTION Outdoor Glass Sculpture exhibition that opened at Sculpture Park @ Waitakaruru Arboretum near Hamilton.

In its fourth year, the exhibition includes glass sculptures by more than 30 artists from around New Zealand

Glass School students win Swarbrick Dixon Glass Awards

Two very different glass works created by two Wanganui Glass School (UCOL) second year students have claimed top honours at Sculpture Park in this year’s Swarbrick Dixon Glass Awards.

Hamish WebsterHamish Webster’s Mesozoic series won the Excellence in Glass Sculpture award and enthralled judge Karl Chitham by “combining a subtle playfulness with a diminutive confidence”. The Excellence in Glass Sculpture is open to all New Zealand glass artists.
