The Wanganui Glass School, in partnership with the Quay School of the Arts at Whanganui UCOL, offers full-time students nationally unique courses including the three year, level 6 Diploma in Glass Design and Production, the four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts Majoring in Glass and one year Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts. The one year Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts enables students to gain skills, techniques and knowledge in either glass, painting, printmaking, photography or sculpture and to examine theories underlying contemporary art practice. Two major themes aligned with the Diploma and BFA programmes have been developed by the current glass staff: the first is focused on the use of recycled glasses by Australian/American warm glass expert, Lionel Teer, and, the second is the authorship of a Glass Technology textbook outlining specific developments in glass alchemy by UK hot glass specialist, Nigel Jones. Wanganui Glass School classes are generally limited to 12 students, a personal atmosphere in which the multi-national faculty, distinguished practicing glass artists, are dedicated to guiding the students in the discovery and development of their specific intellectual, technical, critical and aesthetic abilities. Students work in hot, warm and cold glass techniques including glassblowing, casting, fusing, slumping, sand casting, painted glass, mixed-media sculpture, and engraving. They are encouraged in teamwork, experimentation and conceptual development.
